Match Report vs Cavaliers
21st June 2026 @ Hayes Point (Skipper Steveo, Report
Greg C)
After a last-minute venue change, the Casuals made their
way to Barry Wanderers' Hayes Point ground — a temporary
home for the day — to face the Cavaliers. Perched by
the sea and surrounded by beech trees, it was a setting that
promised much in the way of shade, but didn’t quite
deliver. Spirits were already high, buoyed by the prospect
of Will's mum's tea, and they rose further when the skipper
strode out for the toss and called it right — we would
be batting first.
‘Has’ (Hasnat) and James B opened the batting,
looking to get some runs on a low bouncing pitch. James was
first to go, after a few wafting shots passing the edge -
eventually nicking one through to the keeper for 0. Has looked
composed with a few nice defensive shots, but unfortunately
he too succumbed to a similar fate for 11.
Will arrived at three with considerably more bat on ball.
Four eyes — courtesy of his spectacles — seemingly
gave him a distinct advantage: two trained on the ball, one
scanning the field, and one keeping tabs on his son somewhere
in the vicinity of the pavilion. A brief pause in play confirmed
the boy's whereabouts, and we were back at it.
Greg at four, and with it a strong first change bowling attack
from Cavaliers - requiring a period of defensive resilience.
A few cover drives to the boundary, the partnership was going
steady with Will increasingly taking the attack to the bowlers,
launching several towering sixes back over their heads, into
the trees beyond. A lapse in concentration saw Greg pull a
soft shot to square leg for a respectable 37, ending a 100+
partnership. Will continued to 80, before being stumped after
an unsuccessful skip down the wicket.
Skipper Steve arrived at the crease playing the ball with
the kind of measured authority that suggested he had the Stokes
vacancy firmly in his sights. It was not to last. A running
mix-up cut short his audition, leaving him stranded and run
out for 11. Steve was not a happy camper, expressing his discontent
for at least 2 overs after. Matt in next, whipping the ball
off his pads - beautiful leg glance for 4 before being caught
for 6. This was followed by Ben, who also hit some quick runs,
before being caught at square leg.
Rob, perhaps stricken with guilt over his role in the captain's
dismissal, responded in the most heartfelt way he knew: a
premeditated heave into the tennis court that suggested remorse
was not, in fact, consuming him greatly. He and Dan saw us
through to the break, both not out.

The halfway interval brought with it a much-needed opportunity
to rehydrate — and, more importantly, to enjoy the magnificent
spread laid on by the Mason-Wilkes family. The sandwiches
alone would have satisfied most: coronation chicken, ham and
mustard, and egg mayo — the holy trinity. But Will's
mum was not done there. Three homemade cakes followed, headlined
by a Victoria sponge with jam from Will's own garden, and
rounded off with a punnet of strawberries — (not from
Will's garden?) — served with cream. It was, in short,
exactly what the doctor ordered: enough fuel to galvanise
our bowling attack, and enough comfortable lethargy to do
precisely the opposite to the opposition.
Goffy and Dan opened up the bowling with pace and accuracy,
and were quickly rewarded with two early wickets, including
a great catch in the deep by Has — providing positive
early signs and a platform to build on. Perhaps it was the
scorching heat, or perhaps the sheer intimidation of a Casuals
XI riding high on fructose sugar— either way, one opener
wilted and was forced to retire early (though he would return
to the crease later)
Matt (‘Grinchy’) and Ben came on for first change
- Matt was rewarded for some tighter bowling in his third
- with batter 5 caught by Ben in the deep for 30. In came
their number 4, tapping the wicket like he knew what he was
doing - he evidently did - eventually scoring 101. It could
however have been another story if our skipper held on to
a chance bowled by Ben with batter on 30. The centurion was
also fortunate that a mistimed punch down the ground failed
to stick for what would have been a Goff caught-and-bowled.
The fielding was lively throughout, with plenty of energy
from ‘Jim’ behind the stumps. The highlight came
when a well-timed quip about Steve O's catching ability proved
so amusing that the batter 4 paused mid-innings to compose
himself before hitting the ropes yet again a few balls later.
A little later ‘Jim’ followed this up with an
excellent stumping off the bowling of Rob, quick hands for
wicket keeping debutant.
Andy (Shaaane) deployed his customary umpire-schmoozing routine
— entirely unnecessary on this occasion, as the ball
clipped neither pad nor edge, a wobble seam straight into
the stumps to send batter six on his way.
By the midpoint Rob was on a roll, taking back-to-back wickets
in the seventh over. The field closed in for the hat-trick
ball, the tension briefly rising — before normality
was restored.
It grew tighter than it should have towards the end, a few
lapses of concentration in the field (cough) giving the Cavaliers
a sniff. But some disciplined bowling — notably two
clean bowled from Rob and Goff — kept the Casuals on
course, and victory becoming more of a reality.
‘Has’ got a couple of over towards the end -
inflicting the decisive hammer blow to topple batter 11 -
in turn topping off a successful afternoon of Casuals cricket
- winning by narrow 15 runs.
