Match Report vs Dinas
Powys 4th May 2025 @ Hayes Point (Skipper Steveo, report
Goffy)
The underlying conversations in this early part of the 2025
season (being 3 Sunday games now) is related to a common Cazh
problem in recent seasons. Why do the 'batters' let us down
leaving the 'bowlers' to bail us out. So before we get into
the finer detail of this match, I thought I would ask ChatGPT
about this same conundrum....
"That's a classic frustration for many cricket fans!
When batters fail to perform, it puts immense pressure on
the bowlers to compensate — even though their primary
job is to take wickets and defend runs but definitely not
to score runs with the bat!
Nonetheless, I promise not to refer to this in anyway in
this following match report......
Dry and cloudy - very windy conditions were to greet us at
the Common. The usual side of a mountain pitch with a very
small roadside boundary. Wicket looked indifferent. Cazh to
bat first. Cheese and Rob O to lead off. It soon became apparent
that the pitch was as honest as a Labour Party manifesto.
We had no bounce and bounce. We had ball sticking and ball
shooting through. After 5 we were 14-1 (Cheese didn't fancy
it). Rupert to join Rob. Both had to be very watchful. After
10 we had managed to add a further 18! 32-1. Young George
White had joined the oppo attack at this point and did well
although wicketless. It was mentioned that it must be quite
tough for his father knowing that he is not the best cricketer
in his household. Another then commented that his father probably
isn’t the best cricketer in his own bedroom, but I said
I would never include that in a match report as that’s
unfair. Rob next to depart, after finding the rope a couple
times was bowled. 43-2 after 15. 7 runs later, Rupert bowled
after getting a bit of a start. 67-3 at drinks. Top order
batters (1,2 &3) had amassed a massive 47 between them
and all gone before drinks - but this would not need to be
mentioned in this match report.
2- stroke (Liam F) and Whitey Senior now at the crease -
nearly got us to 25 overs without further loss but alas -
Senior, after a majestic off drive for 4 was also bowled in
the 25th. 84-4
Skipper SteveO next .... Skipper SteveO gone 86-5
After 30 we were celebrating the 100 up as 2-stroke had really
got going but he had also fallen in the 29th, as had the incoming
Pylon. 103-7.
Pabs, Goffy, Dan & DT left. Reasonable target (considering
all the talk from the batters about how impossible it was
to bat on) set at 120. Pabs and Goffy added 25 before Goffy
holed out and then Pabs and Dan added another 34 before running
out of overs. 162 for 8. However, we will not mention in this
match report how the bowlers consistently have to bail out
the batters as that would be totally disingenuous on such
a difficult wicket.
Cheese 9 (2x4)
Rob O 22 (2x4
Rupert 16 (2x4)
Two stroke 27 (4x4)
White Snr 11 (1x4)
SteveO 2
Pylon 6
Pabs 20 Not Out (2x4)
Goffy 11 (1x6)
Dan 20 Not Out (3x4)
DT DNB
Conversation at tea revolved around a quiz set by the Cheese
to name the six countries that had one of the 4 main compass
points in their name. All were identified, however Goffy not
happy about not being allowed to include West Germany. Pabs
provided coffee club treat which was a Peruvian blend with
treacle and dark undertones. Very satisfying.
So, defending 162. Dan & Goffy up first. After 8 overs
score was at 40-1 with Dan hitting stumps with his 2nd ball
( i think). Their opening bat was very strong and the only
batter able to score. With a small total to defend, Skipper
Steveo needed to make a change.
DT first change and Skipper Stevo himself, after having failed
miserably again with the bat stepped up and put himself in
the firing line against the wall established and comfortable
batsman! What great leadership! Two balls later, he'd gone
for 10. After his first very expensive over a lesser person
would’ve taken themselves off, but not Skipper Steve0!
Oh no the fearless leader stepped up again to continue his
spell. The DT / Steve O combo between overs 9-17 did for 4
batters and including the destructive opener who was bowled
by DT. We felt we were back in the game.
Pylon brought into the attack at over 18 with the score at
75-5. (their opening bat got 52 of those!) Another masterstroke
by our all seeing and all knowing skipper as the DT / Pylon
combo had them 9 down and dead at 32 overs. Whitey senior
chipped in with a few overs before Pabs joined the party with
the ball after martialling the gloves for the first 20 and
bowled their number 11 with his 2nd ball. 106 all out. Cazh
bowlers taking 10 wickets as well as scoring 50% of the runs.
But that will never be mentioned in this match report.
Dan 4 0 14 1
Goffy 4 0 24 0
DT 8 0 21 3
SteveO 4 0 21 1
Pylon 7 0 13 2
Dave W 4 2 11 1
Pabs 0.2 0 0 1
3 catches - dave white; Liam Warren; Dan Lewis
A resounding victory and first of the season for the Cazh
- first of many!! The board have also released a statement
confirming full support of incumbent captain and are happy
with the direction the club is going in. Willow league first
outing tonight (6th) - let's keep this streak going. Streak
= 1 (5/5/25)
