Right, ‘nuff said on that. What follows is a report of the league and cup double match versus Eclipse, which will contain no naming and shaming finger pointing or piss taking (well maybe a bit)

The match was played and the pristine Diamond ground, home of Cardiff Cricket Club. The weather was perfect(ish), a bit too humid but lovely otherwise. I think skipper Jim won the toss and decided to field. It was cup rules so 18 overs and 2 overs per bowler.

Dan and DT opened the bowling and Eclipse struggled to score. DT took the 1st wicket with a speculative LBW shout, which, if anything, was clipping leg. Thankfully the umpire thought it was hitting middle and leg so off the batsman went. I think there were also a couple of dropped catches in these first 4 overs. There was also a run out by “Super fielder” Rhys.

NB: fall of wicket is not recorded and runs per over not recorded till over 9 in our book

Liam Forster (Diesel! Four star! Get it?) and Steveo took the next 3 overs with Diesel coming back for his 2nd over later in the game. Both bowled well and Steveo was unlucky not to get a wicket. (Can’t remember if there were any dropped catches in this spell but probably). Score after 7 overs was (about) 41 for 2. Rupert and Will took the next spells both bowled well Will not taking a wicket but Rupert taking 2, both caught. After 11 overs 79 for 4. There may well have been a dropped catch or two in this spel

At some point around now there were 2 Eclipse retirements having reached 25. Maxi and Diesel (For his 2nd over) were next up. Runs came a bit more freely in this 3 over spell . 14 overs 105 -4. The Nylon Pylon and Robbo rook the last 4 overs and again bowled well Robbo taking 2 wickets but also in this spell there were a couple of dropped catches. Eclipse finished on 139 - 7 as there was also a run out from Diesel in the last 4 overs. More than we could have/should have been chasing but with batting down to 9/10 we could give it a good go.

Rupert and Robbo opened with Robbo carrying on from his century on Sunday with some lusty blows, one of which hit the clubhouse bending one of the C’s whilst the scorers took evasive action. (By that I mean an actual letter C, not calling the scorers cunts). Rupert was 1st to fall for 9 with a couple of fours, bowled. Will replaced him and, after a slow start to tricky bowling got off the mark with a 6. Robbo retired and Diesel went into bat ( I’m not giving up on this nickname). He batted really well playing some great shots but struggled to evade the fielders. He fell for 4 in the 8th 2-57.

Dan in next and he started scoring quickly. We were still up with the required rate. Will was one away from retirement when he chased a wide one and was caught. No real harm done but a shame for Will. 92-3 off 13. Captain Jim next in and didn’t waste any time scoring a 4 off his 1st ball. He wasn’t there for long though falling in the 14t over, Dan also retiring on 28 around now. Super fielder Rhys was in at 7, lower than usual after damaging his hand in the early overs before making a catch run out and some essential, athletic (not said very often when talking about casuals fielding) stops. Steveo in at 8. Both didn’t waste many balls and both were run out in the 16th and 17th overs respectively. 129 - 6 with 2 retirees with One over to go. Maxi and the Nylon Pylon at 9 and 10 with a nervous DT on the sidelines slowly realising that his plan of getting out somehow to the 1st ball faced may not be viable. Maxi and the NP (too long a nickname), scored 8 of the 1st 4 balls but agonisingly the last two balls were dots. Casuals loose by a whisker. Had 2 runs been scored off the last 2 balls there would have been a bowl off (bowling at one stump, we would have been there all fucking night) not a super over which would be much better.

An amazing game I’d cricket, played in a friendly spirit. The casuals definitely lost as a team, we all know that we could have caught better, run faster around the field and between the wickets, thrown more accurately, bowled a tighter line but at the end of the day it was, I think our best all round performance of the season and tiny margins made the difference. The bar was open with mine-host Robbo as landlord and both teams stayed for a few. #weshouldplayheremoreoften
