Match Report vs Penarth 30th June 2024 @ Penarth (Skipper Jim, Report Liam F)

Next up for the Cazh was a trip to Penarth C.C on another overcast Sunday game. Skipper James Hodkinson choosing to bat first.

First in was James Hodkinson and Steve Biggs the latter playing his final game for the Casuals before moving up North. Penarth C.C opened the bowling with some very tricky seam bowling with a very well run 3 from the Skipper to end the first over. With only one more run scored Hodkinson was caught in the field off F.Nazar’s bowling. In at 3 was Jack Beaumont who along with Steve started to build up the runs with some good batting against some good bowlers. After a couple of boundaries from Steve was bowled out for 13 in his last batting innings. Thankfully this was the last we saw of Steve in a casuals jersey, read on to find out more. In at 4 was another Steve (The O’Reilly kind) who came in with intent and with his very first ball smashed it for 4 runs. Not long after that Jack was caught in the field after scoring a very healthy 26 with four 4’s and plenty of good running between the wickets. In next was the first debutant of the day in Kian Jones who sadly didn’t last long after two quick singles was caught in the field. In at Six was the first of the White Family in George to partner up with Steve O’Reilly who was building up a few runs while wickets were falling. George was next to go being bowled out for a duck by L.Dennett for his 3rd wicket of the game.

Promoted to 7 was Forster back at his old club to partner up with O’Reilly. Steve absolute smashed another ball all the way for 6 runs with a lovely shot but was sadly caught in the field of the next ball for a quick fire 13 runs. In next was Rob Owens at the crease, with plenty of time left in the innings. Rob and Liam started to build up a few runs together with plenty of running between the wickets going into drinks at 67-6. Feeling refreshed Rob and Liam started to build add a lot of runs to the total which wasn’t looking too good before drinks. With boundaries and quick running between the wickets we made it to 100 runs in the 23rd over. Punishing the spin bowling of Penarth Forster hit a six right over the heads of Mid On.

The run rate really started to pick up finding ourselves reacting 150 runs by the 28th over with plenty of boundaries from both Owens and Forster taking advantage of a short boundary on one side including Forster toeing a couple more sixes and fours. Soon after Owens and Forster brought up the 100 partnership together. Rob hit a lovely dab down the on side to bring up his 50 and his first of the season so far. Next to reach his 50 was Forster and his first for a Casuals with a cut shot down the onside to hit a 4. Soon after Rob was out for 50 inconveniently after I (Forster) told him I was a colourblind Graphic Designer after not seeing one of there fielders in green in the deep and was still laughing in bewilderment (Sorry Rob).

A partnership of 122 runs for the 7th wicket partnership. In next was Sanay for his first game of the season who managed to get a few quick runs before being caught off opening bowler J.Stephens. In after Sanay was Liam Warren who started off steadily and hit a quick single followed by a 4 but was caught. Last batsmen in was Father of the White family David, David managed to get a single run before being caught in the outfield. Cardiff Casuals finished all out for 202.

Batting:
James Hodkinson - 4
Stephen Biggs - 13
Jack Beaumont - 26
Steve O'Reilly - 13
Kian Jones - 2
George White - 0
Liam Forster - 54*
Rob Owens - 50
Sanay Goyal - 3
Liam Warren - 5
David White - 1

After tea opening the bowling for the Cazh was Liam Warren and David White. Liam Warren started from the clubhouse end and went for 14 runs off the over. David White from the other end started off well and got the opening batsmen out for an LBW for 1 run. After a few more over each with some good economical bowling White broke through again bowling out the other opening batsmen for 18 runs. After 5 overs each and the score at 62-2 a change in the bowlers brought Steve Biggs and George White into the frame. Both bowlers continued the good bowling and in George White’s second over he got the 3rd wicket of the game as the batsmen was caught in the field by Rob Owens. After that over Penarth started to pick up the scoring again before in Stuart Broad’s sorry Steve Biggs’ final over for the Cazh and in his very last ball got a wicket again caught in the field by Rob Owens similar scenes in the field of celebration like when England beat Australia in the fifth Ashes Test at The Oval last summer.

Drinks were up at 20 overs into the game with the score at 116-4 and the next change in bowling. In next was Liam Forster and Sanay Goyal. After a couple of good overs each Penarth started to pick up the run rate off the bowling of Forster, Sanay continued bowling some really good spin only going for 12 runs in his 5 overs including a maiden in his last over. The next change in bowling brought in Steve O'Reilly and Rob Owens. Penarth continued to pick up the run rate against the spin of O’Reilly. Rob Owen’s continued his fine form with the bat into his bowling picking up the next wicket of the game bowling out the Penarth batsmen who was looking well set on 40 runs. David White was back into the bowling attack trying to push for some more wickets. Rob Owens picked up another wicket with the first ball of his 2nd over caught by Sanay.

With the score at 187 for 7 it was looking like a close game with only 1 overs left of the game. After a couple of boundaries from Penarth including some preventable mistakes in the field. David White took a wicket I in the very last over with James Hodkinson taking the catch in the field, with only 2 runs in it and 3 balls left this was getting really tense. Unfortunately for the Cazh with the next ball the Penarth batsman hit a 4 wining the game for them. Cardiff Causals losing the game by 2 wickets.
