Match Report vs Cavaliers
19 May 2024 @ Pontcanna(Skipper Steveo , Report Rob)
Saturday had seen the Cardiff parks games abandoned due to
heavy rain, but Sunday was a beautiful day. After a 10am pitch
inspection, the pitch had just about dried out, with blue
skies forecast for the day. Amazingly, 11 Cazh arrived on
time and set out their wide range of chairs, snacks, and a
gazebo.
Captain Jim wasn’t available, so Captain (Birdseye)
Steve was promoted from VC. Feeling the heavy (medium) weight
of captaincy bestowed on him by Jim, his first job was to
promote co-captain Ed from Vice Captain / Associate to the
Captain / Deputy Skipper / Cheesemonger to Captain (see flowchart,
not attached).
Cavs were fewer in number, probably because we started 30+
minutes late the previous year and every fixture before that.
So no toss, the Cazh were fielding with Goffy and Rob to open
up. New ball on a parks pitch, so plenty of wobble up and
down and the ball was doing a bit as well – classic.
Both openers started well, with 3 maidens in the first 10
overs. Plenty of playing play and missing from the openers
off Goffy, who finally got his reward with a C&B in the
12th.
Dave and Pat on to bowl with a few more runs being scored
but with a bit more risk as they were coming down the wicket.
Somehow, DT got one of the set batters out bowled- fiddling
about, looking for non-existent spin. Two more batters settled
in and got out doing the same thing to DT. A quick 3 wickets
and the middle order stripped out!
Sadly, this brought out some capable batting, with Cavs beginning
to build a good score on a difficult wicket. Robbie came on
and got the opener Saleem (42) caught behind - possibly bored
after watching the run-up which started on the boundary. Ed
S bowled some tidy stuff and SteveO tried his luck, but the
short boundaries didn’t suit his moonballs in the final
overs.
Goffy and Rob back on to bowl at the death– Goffy finally
standing where he was told and taking a catch off Rob. Cavs
175-6 off 40 overs. A good total, calmly built after a brief
Dave intervention. The book shows very few extras, but from
memory that was down to bad scoring!
BYOT as it was a parks pitch. Seemed to be more of a spread
than normal.
Bowler Overs Maidens Runs Wickets
Goff Day 8 - 2 – 21 - 1
Rob Owens 8 – 1 – 29 - 1
Patrick Dean 5 – 0 – 44 - 0
David Thomas 8 – 1 – 26 - 3
Robbie Sayer 4 – 1 – 14 - 1
Edward Stagg 4 – 0 – 19 - 0
Steve O'Reilly 3 – 0 – 33 - 0
Sadly for the Cazh, the Cavs had a good bowling attack on
what was still a tricky surface. Could we grind out a result?
Bryn and Handsome Steve to open up. Bryn quickly getting to
6 then quickly getting bowled by Ramagowda. Jack in and out
for 3 – caught by the keeper, also off Ramagowda.
This brought Robbie out to have a whack, and whack he did,
with Young Steve serenely going about his business at the
other end, they were building a nice partnership…until
Robbie was also caught by the keeper off Adi. 38 off 30 balls
with a 75 run partnership. A fair chunk of the required runs,
with Athletic Steve still well set.
Handsome Ed came and went quickly (a Cazh theme developing)
with Cheesey Ed next up and was pootling along nicely (on
22) when he was…caught off the keeper off Ramagowda.
Ex-Captain Steve had a first baller, holing out to Ramagowda
but at least to a fielder rather than the keeper. Rob, Pat
and Goffy were in and out in the next 20 deliveries –
bowled, bowled and bowled after blocking a few (yes, he tried).
Fall of wickets column getting a hammering.
Poor old Young Steve was at the other end, watching this
chaos. Luckily, he got to 50 before he ran out of idiots.
Last man in was DT who was as enthusiastic as ever. 48 needed
off 7 overs.
Cavs knew who the danger man was, so on comes Ally Parkhurst
to bowl the mooniest of all moon balls. No chance of getting
caught behind off these, so he got stumped instead. 133 all
out. 33.3 overs. DT on 1 run and protecting his (binary?)
average. 3 catches and 2 stumpings for the Cavs keeper.
