Match Report vs Lisvane 14 May 2023 @ Lisvane (Skipper Luvvers, report Pat)

After an inconclusive debate as to the exact terminology during the pre match and batting innings, the Casuals took their earlier season winning run/streak/spell/trend to St Mellons for a Sunday friendly with Lisvane.

Capt Luvvers’ winning habit extended to the toss (won: batting) but unfortunately not out into the middle. Despite lasting eight times longer than the previous innings, the skipper was castled by the opening bowler without troubling the scorers. Thankfully he had issued his instructions clearly to opening partner Rob to anchor the Cazh batting efforts – one run from his first 24 balls, repelling the cream of the Lisvane bowling arsenal. Will joined Rob at the fall of the first week racing to 21 before chipping a catch into the leg side. Cheese replaced Will and with Rob saw off the opening bowling pair, who went unchanged through their 8 overs each, 63-2 from 16 overs.

With Stevo padded up and champing at the bit, Rob and Ed continued to accumulate the runs and exploit the bad balls of the first change bowlers. Stevo was dispatched to the (highly complicated) scorebox with mixed results. Later in the innings for the benefit of the scoring/spectators, Goff took over the reins.

With the mention of a 100 partnership within sight, Cheese fell for 36, 14 short of both the century and his own half. There followed an acceleration…of Cazh wickets as Stevo and Pabs fell cheaply, the former despite vowing to either ‘muller’ or ‘slam’ the child who took his wicket. 5 wickets down brought Dan to crease, with the Cazh on 146 in the 31st over. Possibly taking a ‘Bazball’ inspiration (or aided by some more generous bowling), Rob and Dan fired 109 from the remaining 9 and a half overs, with Dan at one point within range of overtaking Rob. As it turned out, both reached half centuries and the Cazh closed their 40 overs on a well paced 255-5.

Luvvers bowled 0
Rob not out 70
Will caught 21
Cheese bowled 36
Stevo bowled 4
Pabs bowled 2
Dan not out 59
Total 255-5 (40 overs)

Tea was a bring-your-own affair, with the usual sandwiches and crisps, apple pies and baked goods.

Refuelled, the Casuals took the field to defend the total, with Dan and Goffy (resplendent in navy jogging bottoms – a club fine in other company) opening the bowling. Even with some tidy line and length, the Lisvane openers enjoyed the pace on the ball – one even had the gall to come down the pitch to Dan – keeping the run rate within range after the first 10 overs, 51-0. The Cazh kept up the habit of solid, accurate ground fielding with Will initially cat-like behind the sticks and others (Liam in particular) enthusiastically galloping around the boundary to keep the score down. With their eye in, the opening batsmen took on the first change bowling from Liam, again enjoying the added pace on the ball, but with Pabs taking over at the far end the reduced speed slowed the scoring and claimed the first wicket, lbw just before drinks. 108-1 from 20 overs at the break.

Once Stevo had rejoined the action following an extended pie break, Patrick and Pabs took up the slow bowling mantle, Patrick taking the second wicket to fall soon after. Even with some idiosyncratic switch hitting from batsman 4, the hosts continued to trail the required rate and needed 120 from the final 12 overs. Debutant Ross replaced Pabs, taking the valuable wicket of the remaining opener with his first ball for the club – caught by Dan at long off, a feat presumably not frequently achieved? Having carried out a solid 5 overs of warm up displays for the captain, Stevo replaced Patrick and once again proved the value of pace off, taking the 4th wicket and effectively ending any doubt over the result. With the win in the bag, the skipper gave the ball to Cheese to finish the final overs, and claim the final wicket – Will’s increasingly less cat-like keeping still good enough the whip the bails off and keep the score under 200. Lisvane finished on 193-5, Cazh win by 62 runs.

An enjoyable visit to a previous Casuals home venue, and a successful extension of the winning run/streak etc. etc.
