Match Report vs Barry
Wanderers 07 August 2022 @ Hayes Point (Skipper Luvvers,
report Pat)
On a glorious hot and sunny day, the Casuals travelled to
Hayes Point for a first match this year against Barry Wanderers.
Unfortunately due to the last minute nature of the game (original
fixture at Chepstow having fallen through at late notice),
the opposition wasn’t entirely Barry Wanderers. So come
start time/Steve-o arrival time the scratch/crack side that
took the pitch were some Wanderers, others from Sully Centurians
and a couple of Cazh volunteers.
Luvvers and Rob opened the batting and within a couple of
overs on an uncharacteristically spicy pitch were calling
for further protection, particularly from the opening bowler
at the Ty Hafan end. After a solid opening stand, Luvvers
was out caught and Rob was bowled by a ball that was on the
lower end of the ‘up and down’ pitch scale.
The partnership that followed was a joyful 22 over period
of inactivity for the Cazh both spectating and in the field,
as Will and Tesh amassed 158 between them. Will struck 114,
carefully placing the ball wherever he liked, including through
the front window of a nearby Lexus. Sadly two further efforts
missed their targets of the car’s roof/bonnet/other
windows, but happily the owner wasn’t too pissed off
when he appeared at the tea interval.
Another batting pair that decided to leave in quick succession,
Tesh was bowled and Will was caught in the space of 7 balls
bringing Steve-o and Jim to the crease. What followed was,
in the opinion of one of the umpires, a great deal of expended
energy in the form of windmilling/turbines as well as one
very near collision in the middle of a ‘quick’
single. That said, each batsman contributed a further 23 runs
before Steve gave Dan the chance to practice a ‘Labuschagne
leave’ from the final ball.
Luvvers caught 7
Rob bowled 17
Will caught 114
Tesh caught 31
Steve-o bowled 23
Jim not out 23
Dan not out 0
Total 253-5
After an excellent spread was heartily tucked into (see separate
tea watch), the Cazh headed out into the field to defend a
seemingly good total.
The first part of the Wandurians innings was dominated by
the ongoing gladiatorial battle for Cazh catch numbers. Will,
stationed at slip, took a couple of sharp ones to open proceedings.
Dan chipped in next, prompting a mid pitch discussion of the
standings. No conclusion was definitively reached, but the
unmistakable roars from various parts of the outfield signalled
Steve-o taking the next couple, the Casuals bowlers keeping
the chances flying to the competitors with reliable regularity.
The increasing age of the incoming batsmen, as well as the
Centurers operating below the asking rate (reaching 117-5
by drinks), led captain Luvvers to give Liam a safety briefing
before unleashing him at the lower order. After successfully
not killing or injuring anyone, Liam then displayed his Cazh
credentials by having a well earned sit down/lie down between
balls in the outfield.
Tidy bowling from Dan, DT, Pabs and Rob brought the hosts
to 197-9 in the 35th over, requiring the last pair to find
57 to win from 32 balls. The number 11 batsman was the opposition
captain, and one who had scored a century against the Cazh
last year. Batsman number 10 is listed in the book as Dave
Sylvester – we are reliably informed this batsman was
not in fact the octogenarian who had shown Foxy-esque levels
of dynamism early in the day, but a late arriving substitute.
What followed was a brutal assault on Steve-o ‘s &
Paul's bowling, as balls were rapidly dispatched higher and
higher over the trees and into the Ty Hafan car park. The
hosts reached the winning post with 5 balls to spare. The
Sully Centurions sub scoring 50 off 15 balls.
A slightly deflating end, but a mostly enjoyable day out.
