Match Report vs Hawks 20 July 2022 @ Pontcanna (Richie and Alex H)

A low scoring Wednesday evening thriller on Pontcanna fields! The evening started with Stevo bemoaning the end of the two day heatwave and Goffy on the phone having suffered suspected fraud. Richie won the toss and decided to bat first.

Luvvers and Alex opened, with the first couple of overs a sign of what was to come. Bowlers on top as the first two overs went for just 2 runs. The first casualty of the evening was the overdue end of Alex's bat. A full pitched delivery struck the toe sending both the ball and the back of the bat down the pitch!

What followed was a good battle between the opening bowlers and batsmen with 8 overs passing for 31 runs with the loss of no wickets. Seeking to press on Luvvers (18) unluckily dragged the opening ball of 9th over onto his stumps. That bought Stevo (0) to the crease, who after narrowly surviving a bouncer that whizzed past at head height was bowled by a good delivery.

Richie was next out to bat and set out about picking off the bad balls as the Cash attempted to press on towards 100. After earlier being dropped Alex (34) departed, finding the edge sending the ball looping to point. Rob (3) was next to the crease and with 4 overs remaining went on the attack before being caught. Jim (9) was the last Cazh batter of the evening striking two crucial fours in the final over (with some assistance from the fielders) prior to being bowled on the last ball of the innings leaving Rich not out on 15.

The Cazh finished on 101-5 off 20.

The second innings started with Goffy and Dan bowling back to back maidens, making the target of 102 look relatively defendable! 3 more tight overs apiece followed with Dan removing the opener for duck, caught behind by Jim, and Goffy having the no3 caught at cover by Luvvers leaving the Hawks 29-2 off their first 8 overs.

Shaky was up next bowling the remaining opener with a good delivery before having the no5 caught at mid-on by Goffy. Luvvers then started his spell enacting some revenge on Stevo's behalf with a few bouncers of his own which troubled the Hawks batsmen.

Casuals excellent fielding effort was continued by a sharp run out from Luvvers in the next, with his accurate throw running out the batsmen for a duck! A sign of the pressure building and the Casuals starting to gain the ascendancy.

DT (1 for 20 off 3) and Rob (0 for 24 of 2) bowled the final five overs for the casuals with DT claiming a wicket, again caught behind by Jim. That left Rob with unenviable task off bowling the last over with the Hawks requiring 11 to win and 10 to draw. After a wide to start the over and some agonising byes, the Hawks needed two to win of the last ball. A single was managed before shakey throw and Jim clipped off the bails to prevent the 2nd run.
