Match Report vs Chartered Trust 02 May 2019 @ St Fagans (Skipper and report Dan)

After the landmark win over Rogerstone and looking at the batting line up on offer for this friendly against Chartered Trust, Captain Dan was lulled into a false sense of security at winning the toss – choose once again to bat first. Trust were supposedly a little depleted during the season of 2018, but they seemed to be back to full strength for this match/season. Another potentially captain cock up – was not looking at the wicket, before making up his mind on what his team should do – though maybe it wouldn’t have a made a difference.

Kim and Big Willy opened the batting against what looked from the side-lines quite innocuous bowling – it wasn’t loopy or short, just didn’t look worrying. Kim negotiated his way off strike early in the first and Big Willy after padding the 1st delivery, was bowled by the 2nd . Jesus next in to steady the ship. 3overs later and 9 runs later Kim was unlucky to cream one straight to cover who took an excellent catch. Alex took his place. Kim’s assessment of the pitch was not a good one – moving, turning, bouncing /not bouncing – all in all not a batting wicket…but what did he know!...The wickets of Alex and Winkie fell in the 5th and 7th over – both playing on.

The 8th and 9th over saw Jesus ‘tee off’ with a few need boundaries (which had to be hit hard as the grass was bushy), and James got his Casuals career off to a good start with a boundary, but fell next ball trying to do the same. Unfortunately, this followed Jesus’s fall – scything the ball to backward point. The next wickets fell with the score still on a worryingly low score of 40. Dave White and Dan put on what looked like a promising partnership, until Dave called the skipper through on a suicide run – which saw him out by about 10 yards. Dave picked up his partnership with Shakey and the pair made 18 before the end of the reduced overs. It’s only a miracle that we finished the overs.

Basically, the Cazh needed to somehow save their blushes and produce a decent bowling and fielding display.

Dan opened up and got a couple to nibble through, but it was Shakey’s first over that was the embarrassment – first ball, he served up the biggest pie he could – slow full toss, which the batsman took a large chuck out of and sent the remainder straight down Alex’s throat at log off! 2 ball later he bowled the number 3 with a slow bouncer. Filth. Dan’s 2nd was a maiden and third picked up the next wicket, the batsman changing his guard to leg, a couple of expansive practice shots in the direction of the boundary, first ball bowled off stump – low and moving. 16-3 off 5overs.

Shakey’s final over took the punishment it had previously deserved! He was replaced by Dave W and Jesus in the attempt to encourage more movement from the pitch. Both bowled fine, but it was Jesus who took the wickets – the first caught by Kim in the deep and the other bowled top of middle.

It looked as though we could have been in with a sniff (if we had another 20 on the board), there were a couple of further chances – James tried to emulate the stumping calamity of the youtube keeper off Steveo’s bowling – perfectly juggling the ball and dropping it before taking out middle stump, Kim put one down (similar to what he had caught off Will), but this time off Rob. Rob was lucky enough to have Jesus under the next catching chance – which was taken. Trust reached the target with 6 wickets down and 3.5 overs left. So at least we made a good fist of it.

Dan – 3-1-4-1
Mark -3-0-23-2
Dave W -2-0-12-0
Jesus -2-0-5-2
Steveo -2-0-4-0
Rob O – 2-0-19-1
Kim 0.1-0-1-0
