Match Report vs Highway
Hurricanes 28 May 2019 @ Blackweir (Skipper and report
Dan)
The Cazh arrived at Blackweir on time, but the oppo were
still a few men short so by mutual consent The Hurricanes
batted first. The team saw the welcome return of Britpop no
so fresh from his Iron man escapades of last year.
The outfield was long and tufty, the wicket looked good,
but it would soon show that lack of roller – it was
prone to variable bounce.
Shakey opened with Goffy, Shakey once again looked stiff
(though I wasn’t looking that closely) and pinged down
a variety of lose wide, lose short and better line and length
deliveries. Goffy started short, but got longer (again wasn’t
looking too closely – but he was nearer) and his second
over he picked up his first and second wickets and was on
for a hattrick (which we didn’t get). His first was
caught by Dan at point and second caught over the head by
James the keeper. Goffy got another in his what would be his
final over – bowled. Shakey had a few chances, the no3
batsman who came in, intent on giving it the long arm –
was dropped by Dave “G Fiddler new whites” White
on the short long off boundary – the ball was high in
the air for a while, before it hit what sounded like his sternum,
by apparently was his thumb and then hit the floor. Two of
the next 4 deliveries also made their way to GF, one only
just clearing the boundary (not technically a drop, as hands
weren’t placed on or near it) but the other by cleared
the boundary by some margin.
GF wished he had taken the catch as he was on to replace
Goffy and took the brunt of some big hits (by the no3 –
who as it turned out, started as a spectator and as the Hurricanes
were waiting for a player invited him in to bat) GF went for
21 in his first over... He did get his own back in the 3rd
over, the no3 caught by Dan in the deep, followed by another
wicket bowled next delivery (this hattrick wasn’t taken
either). Dan replaced Shakey at the river end and didn’t
go for much and picked up a wicket in is last over. Jesus
and Richie bowled a couple of overs and both picked up a wicket
a piece, Richie’s was bowled and Jesus had one caught
in the deep by Rob. Big Willy bowled the last over and got
a wicket first ball – a grass cutter into off stump
and there was a run out last ball. The Hurricanes finished
on 126ao
Shakey – 4-0-27-0
Goffy – 3-0-12-3
Dave W – 4-0-40-2
Dan – 4-1-13-1
Will MW – 2-0-11-1
Rich – 2-0-11-1
Will G – 1-0-4-1
Catches by James, Rob and Dan x2
The Cazh innings was opened by Big Willy and Winkie. It was
difficult to say how good the bowling was, but it must have
been good as both struggled to get the ball away. After 5
overs we’d reached the dizzy heights of 11. In the 6th
Andy was finally bowled playing on. Will and Willy started
to up the run rate as bowlers were changed in 4 over cycles.
Some of the bowling was good and some was very very slow –
which on this wicket could be classed as excellent (as the
ball often didn’t bounce, and the wides rule was relaxed,
so it difficult to get away). Will run Big Willy out in the
11th over with the score on 47. Rob next in, and produced
a good partnership with Jesus until Will retired in the 16th
(reaching his 50 on agreement by the skippers at the start)
which was a shame as he was well in his stride, and probably
would have saw the Cazh home comfortably, as it was we were
still 41 short with 4 overs to go.
Britpop joined Rob and hit the ball well, just found the
fielders more often than not, he fell in the 19th over trying
to go large but was out lbw. Rich fell the same way on the
last ball of the over. 12 required off the last. James and
Rob to give it their all, but weren’t able to miss the
fielders, James holed out with 2 balls to go and Goffy hit
a boundary off the last for the Cazh to finish short on 123-5.
A good enjoyable game, then off to the pub for a pint or 2
in the dying evening sun.
