Match Report vs Glenwood
17 May 2018 @ Wenvoe (Skipper and report Dan)
The team selected by coincidence appeared to be very similar
to that selected in 2017 – in a game we narrowly lost.
The start time was very relaxed for this friendly fixture,
getting started at about 6.20. It was agreed to enforce a
retirement of 35 and max 3 overs per bowler, plus Glenwood
were going to switch in a few players as they had too many
in attendance. The weather was glorious, Dan won the toss
and opted to bat first. Kim and Alex opened up. The innings
started steadily against a competent bowling attack. The pace
picked up in the 3rd and 4th overs. The first wicket fell
in the 7th over, Alex, fell to a good length delivery and
came off shaking his head (14). Jesus next in. Kim had started
to motor and smashed 2 6’s and a few boundaries and
retired in the 9th over (40). Matt Cullan joined Will and
started with a boundary. In the next 5 overs the pair put
on 40 runs only to be halted with Matt pushing off for a quick
single and pulling his hammy. He retired hurt on 20. Rob joined
Will, but Will didn’t last too much longer – he
was unfortunate – creaming an off cover drive but straight
at the close fielder who took an excellent catch (22). 110
off 15. Tesh and Rob tried to push the score along, though
ended up needing to be content with singles, both finishing
not out and the score on 137-2.
Kim 40no (retired)
Alex 14 bowled
Will MW 22ct
Matt C 20 retired hurt
Rob 20 no
Tesh 8no
Pete t, Mark, Steveo, Rich, Dan DNB
Potentially not quite enough, but at least it was defendable.
Steveo took the gloves to give Jesus’s ‘glutes’
a rest. Matt C positioned himself in a non moving third man/long-on
position. Pete T and Shakey opened the bowling. Pete’s
first was excellent only 1 run, and Shakey followed up with
another low scoring over. Pete got the breakthrough in his
next over, one was just out of reach of Rob at mid-off, but
Alex snaffled a well struck blow 2 balls later at mid-wicket.
Rich ‘put one down’ out of the sun off Shakey’s
bowling – I say put it down – it hit him half
way up his forearm, and what began as laughter brought a bit
more concern as it did look as though it hurt quite a bit
(a nice seam mark but no bruise). After 6 overs the score
on 29. Dan came on first change with Richie (to help him take
his mind off his arm). Both did well and Dan took the next
wicket – bowled in his 3rd. 58-2 off 12.
With Matt out of action and the max of 3 per bowler, Captain
Dan needed to look further a field for bowlers. We had enough
but we didn’t want to finished like we did the previous
week…the oppo’s no.4 started to look for a swing
and retired during the pairs spell, but Rob did get the wicket
of the other chap bowled. With 2 overs left Glenwood needed
32 – surely too many to get…Kim up first at the
pavilion end enticed a few singles, then took a caught and
bowled and a bowled in the penultimate delivery. Jesus at
the other end started with a stumped off a wide (the wide
was a bit harsh, however, it did bring back the memory of
Durnell / Male combo back in the late 90’s). Will then
followed up with a straight one last ball to finish the match
with a Cazh victory. 117-7 – we’re on a run, a
run of one....
Pete T – 3-0-12-1
Mark 3-0-14-0
Dan 3-0-11-1
Richie 3-0-17-0
Tesh 3-0-24-0
Rob 3-0-22-1
Kim 1-0-4-2
Jesus 1-0-9-2
An enjoyable game, all very friendly and then off to the
pub for an enormous amount of buffet.
