Match Report vs Eclipse
22 July 2015 @ St Fagans (Skipper and report Kim)
After two convincing victories against Eclipse this year,
both by 9 wickets could the Casuals make it a hat-trick of
wins? To continue this trend the sensible option would be
for the Casuals to chase again. However this required two
vital outcomes a) for the skipper to win the toss and field
or for the opponent to win the toss and bat and b) for all
eleven players to be at the ground on time. The skipper did
his bit and won the toss but as two of the Casuals were making
their way to Wenvoe [Anyone want to guess who they were? One
is very obvious?] and a further one stuck in traffic captain
Kim-drop-three [pronounce in a North Korea accent –
thanks Richie] elected to bat.
The skipper and Rob opened the batting and began very well
posting a partnership of 36 off 5 overs before Rob was bowled
for 9 (1x4). At the other end the skipper enjoyed the short
balls on offer and dispatched three sixes before retiring
on 30 in the 6 over. Jesus and Winkie were now at the crease
whilst Eclipse brought on their two best bowlers who both
bowled extremely well, slowing the run rate. Winkie tried
to up the tempo and was caught behind for 2 which brought
SteveO to the wicket. Prior to SteveO going out to bat we
had our usual conversation on how many balls SteveO would
last. This time round SteveO joined in. The guesses ranged
from a golden to 12. Can’t remember who side that 12
but we all laughed, less SteveO.
Anyway SteveO played a lovely cover drive for 1 run off his
first ball. Next over, second ball SteveO swings the willow,
missed the ball and was bowled. The skipper won the guessing
game! Ash joined Jesus, played a couple of glorious shots
before being run out by a number of yards for 8. I think Jesus
retired around this time for 31 (3x4s) [sorry, don’t
know the over as I missed the bottom of the scorebook whilst
taking the photo]. Goff was promoted to 7 and slog one for
four before being caught for 7. Pabs and Luke batted to the
end of the innings both scoring 5 runs. The Casuals ended
with a very respectable score of 120 for 5 from off their
18 overs.

Goff and Winkie opened the bowling. Unfortunately for them
and the Casuals their two openers were in good form and raced
to 72 off 6 overs before both retiring on 30. There was an
opportunity in between with one of their openers slogging
Winkie to deep mid-week where Kim was stationed. However with
the sun directly in his eyeliner he had no hope and let the
ball goes to the boundary whilst he protects himself. Pabs
and DT was the next pairing and both bowled very well and
slowed their scoring down. Pabs was rewarded with the first
wicket, bowling their number 3. DT then captured their number
5 lbw. Luke replaced Pabs and also captured a wicket, lbw.
However, with their explosive start we were always chasing
the match. Richie and Jesus tried their luck but alas with
no joy as the Eclipse chased down our total with 4 overs to
spare for the loss of 3 wickets. Oh yes, Kim dropped another
very difficult chance [in his opinion] at square leg off Richie!
Sometimes you have to put your hands up and say the other
team were too good on the day which Eclipse were in this game.
Goff 2-0-23-0
Winkie 3-0-44-0
Pabs 3-0-14-1
DT 3-0-10-1
Luke 2-0-15-1
Richie 1-0-9-0
Jesus 0.3-0-3-0
We headed back to the pavilion for a tinny and to listen
to Goffy waffling about his ‘awesome’ performance
whilst in the crowd at the first Ashes test in Cardiff, including
get chucked out for being a silly boy!
