Match Report vs Cardiff
Uni (Staff) 16 July 2014 @ Wenvoe (Skipper and report
Shag)
The Cazh arrived at a slightly damp Wenvoe to play the Uni
Staff, however it was apparent that there weren’t many
staff in the opposition’s ranks. This had been the team
to beat Chartered Trust the previous week, so were going to
be a strong side.
Captain Dan won the toss and chose to bat first. Winkie
and Jesus to open up. The pair started well against a quickish
but erratic bowler, scoring 7 some of which were wides –
which was going to be a theme of the evening. The second over
saw Winkie perish bowled for 4 to a shooter. Kim joined Will.
Both battled well for a partnership of 31, the bowling was
sharp, but often wayward, but the ones that were good were
good.
Another theme of the innings was the enthusiasm of the opposition,
anything that was near the bat or pad or not was accompanied
with appeals, shrieks and jumping up and down. The funniest
of which was against Kim who went to pull a short delivery,
missed it by about a foot, was caught behind and everyone
went up that wouldn’t have been amiss at the recent
test match. Kim was not impressed and questioned both the
keeper and bowler what they were appealing for. Kim was also
on the receiving end of a fast face high delivery and as he
didn’t get an apology (the umpire did) he also muttered
his discontent.
Unfortunately, both Kim and Jesus were unable quieten the
Uni players, Will was caught out at the end of the 6th and
Kim followed bowled at the start of the 7th. Gareth and Rich
next up, Rich being caught for 1 next over, bringing in Paul
who was very unlucky to be run out at the non strikers end
after a bit of mis/non communication with partner Gareth.
40-2 slumped to 43-5 off 8overs. Gareth and Steveo started
to rebuild, but the atmosphere was fever pitch after the Cazh
collapse. Steveo next out bowled for 7, Quickly followed by
the Don for 1 caught. The arrival of a certain Larger Goff
with a small cool bag on seeing and hearing the commotion
on the field ignited a resemblance of the Barmy Army, getting
in on the act with lots of appealing from the minimal crowd
when anything missed the bat or hit the pad.
Gareth who had been trying to get on with whenever on strike
was bowled for 10, and Dan helped get the score to mid 80s
in the 17th over before also being caught. This left the final
pair of Rolf and Shakey to try and see out the overs. Both
made a bit of a mockery of those that went before, scoring
quite freely including 2 lovely drives by Rolf and the re-emergence
of the Shakey Dab. The Cazh finished on 108-9 off the allotted
overs.

Taking to the field and not much to defend the Cazh had
to be sharp in the field and tight with the ball. Shag opened
up and bowled mostly dots, but every over included at least
one boundary. He did however get the first wicket caught excellently
by Kim who after a confab with Keeper Will moved himself from
gully to 3rd slip – the catch something of an oddity
for the Cazh – a clean catch in the slips! Next over
the Don enticed the batsman to hoist a lofted drive to long
on where Dan snaffled the catch. The 5th over saw Shag bowl
the other opener and in the following over a suicidal single
saw Dan whip the ball into Keeper Will who literally demolished
the stumps – flattening all three!
The Uni team on the sidelines seemed to go a bit subdued
after their mini collapse. However, as much as Paul, Rolf
and Shakey tried to both stem the runs and pick up wickets
the total was just not enough to make the batsman play risky
shots from there on, and with the target ever decreasing they
opened their shoulders and quickly reached the required amount
at the end of the 14th over.
It was a shame that the Cazh had failed to post a more competitive
total as we were unable to give the single member of the university
staff a game as he had spent his fielding contribution at
fine leg and long on and we didn’t take enough wickets
to allow him to get to the middle to bat after the bowlers
had had their turn.
The Cazh proceeded to the Wenvoe Arms where it appeared
that another team (?!?) had not turned up for their banquet
of sausage and chips which was kindly offered to the Cazh
for free...which lasted apx 5 minutes before the plates were
empty. Happy Days!!
