Match Report vs Rhiwbina
18 July 2013 @ Llanrumney (Skipper Ed, report Jonny
F)
As the glorious summer weather continued, the Casz arrived
at Llanrumney knowing that the game had not been called off
that morning! Cheese lost the toss and Rhiwbina unsurprisingly
elected to bat as they only had 8 players at the start, although
the rest did turn up during the course of their innings.
Dan opened the bowling and was his usual economical self.
However, it was Cheese who made the first breakthrough in
the second over as the batsman chipped one up to Winky at
mid off who looked a bit nervous under the spinning ball but
snaffled it comfortably enough.
The second wicket came courtesy of a run out when the other
opener, a left hander, hit one straight at Tesh and called
for a suicidal run. Tesh and Will did the rest, running out
the captain at the striker's end. Dan then bowled the next
batsman, leaving Rhiwbina reeling at 10 for 3.
Pete T and Pablo took over the bowling duties, Pablo getting
the next wicket lbw. The batsman didn't look happy but I have
to say it looked out from where I was and Paul and Will were
convinced.
With the score on 24-4, the batsmen looked to just consolidate
and take no risks so with Pete, Pablo & Steve bowling
decent lines, not a lot happened for the next few overs.
Even so, the left hander was still there seemingly playing
everything to leg and although he survived a dropped catch
at backward square, he eventually toe-ended one back to Tesh
for a fine caught and bowled. Mr Tickle had another wicket
later that same over with one that turn a mile and hit the
bottom of off stump.
Rhiwbina struggled to add anything after that as Dan &
Cheese returned to finish off the innings. A run out and another
2 wickets for Ed saw the innings finish with Rhiwbina on 111-8
off their 20 overs.
Dan Lewis: 4 - 0 - 8 - 1
Ed Stewart: 4 - 0 - 13 - 3
Pete Tangney: 3 - 0 - 22 - 0
Paul Stephens: 4 - 0 - 21 - 1
Tesh Hirani: 3 - 0 - 20 - 2
Steve O'Reilly: 2 -0 -19-2
Johnny F & Winky strode out to the middle to begin the
Casuals' reply but the innings started terribly with Jam mistiming
a cut straight to a fielder for a second ball duck. Will took
a few overs to come to terms with the pitch but then started
playing a few shots. Sadly, he was bowled for 14 by a yorker
length delivery, leaving the Casz on 22-2.
Richie H played his usual mix of watchfulness and lusty blows
before being bowled for 13 (He may well have fallen asleep
at the crease waiting for the bowler to get back to his mark).
So with the Casz innings wobbling a bit, we needed somebody
to go out and steady the ship. We couldn't find anyone so
Steve went out instead!
His first contribution was to call for a suicide run which
would have seen him out for 0 but the keeper fumbled the ball
and Steve survived. He then went on to play a normal Stevo
innings with lots a few swishes and edges but also some very
good shots which put Rhiwbina on the back foot and kept the
innings ahead of the required rate.
Meanwhile, Andy H was still there playing a perfect anchor
role - keeping out the good balls, punishing the bad ones
and working the ball around to rotate the strike and allow
Steve to play his normal game. Text book cricket from Winky.
It looked like the two of them would get us over the line,
but the partnership was broken when Steve spooned up a catch
for a fine 33 with just two runs needed for victory. Tesh
Joined Andy but didn't get to face a ball as Andy knocked
off the two runs required, carrying his bat for an excellent
32 not out.
Casz 112-4 in 17th over - a comfortable victory by 6 wickets
with overs to spare.
Johnny F: 0 caught
Andy Hood: 32*
Will M-W: 14 bowled
Richie H: 13 bowled
Steve O: 33 caught
Tesh H: 0
