Match Report vs Cross
Keys 26 May 2013 @ Cross Keys (Skipper Cheese, report
Bowesy)
The Casuals rocked up to a wonderfully hot sunny day with
not a cloud in the sky, which always makes playing cricket
that much more enjoyable. Cheese lost the toss and we were
put out to field. Winkie opened up from the far end with just
a single coming from it. Maria opened from the pavilion end
bowled well before being clattered for four back over his
head, the next ball however took the top of the off stump.
Winkie then got the other opener with a sharp catch from Shakes
at short extra cover from the attempted cover drive. Both
Maria and Winkie bowled well with nothing of note really happening
as the batsmen went on the defensive and their main scoring
options were the wides Maria gave away.
DT then replaced Winkie at the far end and got their number
4 batsman caught without him giving the scorers too much bother,
as he did seem to be a batsman who dealt only in 4's or nothing.
Shakes came on at the other end with him and DT bowling 8
overs between them for just 13 runs. Needless to say it was
a very dull spectacle. Shakey did manage to pick up 2 wickets
in this time, clean bowling their number 3 and if my memory
serves me correctly Will otherwise known as Jesus, took a
sharp catch behind the stumps with an extremely loud appeal,
which could have been deemed unnecessary as by then we had
them at 40 or 50 odd for 5 (I think that was about right!).
Pete Obee and Foxy replaced them and continued to bowl over
after over for very few runs until Pete tempted the batsman
into a slog sweep type shot which carried all the way to Bowesy
on the deep backward square leg boundary who to everyone surprise
(including his own) took the catch with the use of his chest
and elbows to hold onto it. Their number 8 batsman (who was
also their last!) came in and scored a very quick 21 dealing
in 4's or singles. Paul came on and bowled a very tight 3
overs. DT came back for 2 overs and quickly picked up the
last 2 wickets as we allowed them to have a last man standing
due to only having 8 players. One of them was clean bowled
the other was an extremely sharp chance taken by Pete Obee
at slip.
The final bowling figures were:
A.Hood 5-0-12-1
Adam 6-0-25-1
D.Thomas 7.3-0-11-3
M.Stephens 6-3-4-2
P.Obee 5-2-9-1
J.Prior 4-0-25-0
P.Stephens 3-0-11-0
With a target of only 98 to chase, Bowesy and Steveo strolled
out to bat. Both of them scored quite comfortably and quickly
with a few playing and missing. Ed despite his hangover came
out to field for Cross Keys as they were 3 men down and immediately
started trying to get in the batsmans head with some slating.
There were a few shots which had Cross Keys had a full compliment
of players both batsmen may have been caught sooner, luckily
all of them fell into empty spaces until Steveo chip one straight
to their captain in the covers for a good 33. Will them came
into bat and just nudged the singles until he got a waist
high full toss and smashed it to the midwicket boundary for
6. With Bowesy on strike Ed told him he needed six for his
50 but only 4 to win, but playing for the averages Bowesy
hit a short wide one to the boundary for 4 and that was that.
Bowesy finished on 48no and Will on 13no.
Just a little side note, sorry its taken me so long to get
this done I have been busy celebrating the end of uni with
plenty of beer and sun. Also having played my last game for
the Casuals on Sunday (apart from tour) I'd just like to say
a big thanks to everyone involved, its been a brilliant experience
and I hope to keep following the Casuals on the forum in the
future. Should I return to Cardiff in the future to live,
which isn't out of the question I will definitely be joining
you again.
Many thanks and all the best for the future,
Pete (AKA Bowesy)
