Match Report vs Highway
Hurricanes 24 July 2012@ Wenvoe (Skipper & report
Shakey)
Another glorious day gave way to a glorious evening and captain
Shakes did the decent thing, winning the toss and electing
to bat.
Second ball of the match and Adam wished we hadn't as he
was caught at leg gully skying a hit to leg. In came Britpop
to join Johnny F. The partnership started well with 26 coming
off the first 4 overs including a six from Jam to Goff's Fence
(as it is now so named). Then all of a suden progress stopped
with 13 coming off the next 4 overs which were actually tighter
in length and line.
With Highways bowling all their team we just had to be patient
and wait for the new bowlers. When they arrived Jam and Daz
made hay with a large collection of 1s and 2s to the boundary
areas. Sure eough thescorigrate creepe u we bean to threate
the par 140 score.
As Jam reached the 40s (so to speak) his fitness began to
tell but Britpop stepped up and started to clatter the ball
to more effect and boundaries became more common. The 100
stand came in the 16th over. Jam reached his fifty a little
after that, as did Britpop a few minutes later with a sweet
straight drive to the boundary before he was finally bowled
for 51 attempting another heave. So ended a 121 run partnership
which had started slowly but gathered pace just at the right
time. A couple of off drives for four from Jam brought the
innings to an end closing on 137-2 with JF 65*.
Chasing a par 138 Highways quickly got in to trouble with
winkie bowling a tight and penetrative line. He clipped the
off bail of batsman 2, the top of middle for batsman 1 and
leg stump for batsman 3. His spell of 4-1-5-3 gave us the
start we needed and allowed the skipper to rotate the bowling.
Kim picked up a wickt bowled, Dave also a wicket bowled and
Shakes completed the sequence bu thir number 5 as hitting
well an accumulating wth some good running which put us under
pressure.
They wanted 40 off 4 and then 16 off two. Shakes came back
and went for 7 leaving Dave to defend 9. Dave basically won
us the game with the dot balls interrupted by one wide and
two wickets, one a good catch in the deep from Kim. An exciting
last over victory has been rare this season so it was rehearsed
again in the pub after. Dave's ballet skills were an obvious
highlight. Eight of us bowled in preparation for the cup semi
to come!
