Match Report vs Hockey
29 July 2010@ Wenvoe (Skipper Captain Dan, report Richie)
A Thursday game at Wenvoe as a clear and sunny evening welcomed
the Casuals and Cardiff Hockey to their shield encounter.
I have no idea if we won the toss or not but with the Casz
fielding JB opened up at the football end with Captain Dan
taking the 2nd over at the pavilion end.
A two off the first ball was followed by 18 dot balls –
the 14th dot ball gave JB a wicket (bowled) in his 2nd over.
The remainder of the opening duo’s spell saw Hockey
up the rate a little and they had reached 28 for 1 off 6 overs.
First change gave Dion (football end) and Mr Boombastic (Pavilion)
take over and with mixed fortunes as Dion taking a wicket
(caught Shandy w/k) in his first over with Gaz taking some
stick going for 19 in his first over. However Gaz came back
superbly to take two wickets in his second over and one in
his third (two bowled and 1 caught – on the run at point
- by Shakey !!). A good spell by these two bowlers taking
out Hockey’s top and middle order but with Hockey upping
the rate adding 54 runs at the same time.
The final pairing of Pablo and Winky started well with Paul
taking a wicket in his first over but with Hockey now middling
everything they connected with the field was spread. Winky
cranked up his pace a little but the next victim was Shandy
behind the stumps dislocating his little finger. And after
having it ‘popped’ back in by the team’s
mad medic (Doc Holliday) he took an over off the field before
returning to take a position out of harms way with Shakey
taking over the gloves. Paul took two further wickets in his
final over (all three of Paul’s wickets were bowled).
Winky finished his spell wicketless and the Hockey closed
on 133 for 8 off 18 overs (23 extras [16 wides; 2 byes; 5
leg byes] – 17 fours)

With Shandy’s injury messing up the skipper’s
batting plans Darren and Shaggy (Mr Lover Lover) opened the
innings. Hockey striking in the 2nd over removing Gaz (0 -
LBW) followed by Shaky (bowled) first ball – the hat-trick
ball, much to Frank’s relief, went for 5 wides.
Darren and Frank then set about stabilizing the innings,
rotating the strike and adding 54 for the 2nd wicket before
Darren was bowled for 26 in the twelfth over. Paul joined
Frank and departed without troubling the score (bowled) in
the same over.
The Casz were now well behind the rate with just six overs
remaining and 4 wickets down. Frank fell in the 13th over
(bowled) for 22 closely followed by Shagger in the 14th for
3 (caught).
Winky and JB were now at the crease with the remainder of
the Casz desperately kitting up. Winky next to go (stumped)
for 7 in the 15th which also saw Dion follow him back the
next (first) ball (bowled).
With JB out (bowled for 1) 2nd ball of the 16th over it left
Shandy and Richy to face the final few overs – the two
crocks (yes there’s no spelling mistake we were both
carrying or recovering from injuries) adding 18 for the final
wicket finishing 7 and 8 not out respectively.
Casz finishing on a disappointing 94 for 9 off 18 overs (19
extras [17 wides; 2 leg byes] – 5 fours). We were well
in the game up until around the middle of the innings when
we lost too many wickets at regular intervals without keeping
the scoreboard ticking all the time.
