Match Report vs Consmen
18 May 2010@ Llanrumney (Skipper and Report Captain
Dan)
After the glorious weather during the day, come 5.30pm the
dark clouds had materialised around the ground…but fortunately
did not break, and after a while cleared slightly. However,
this did not hinder Captain Dan from winning the important
toss and deciding to bat first. The pitch that Llanrumney
had allocated us was fortunately not the crap one furthest
from the changing rooms, but the one next to it which seemed
like a good track….
The Cheese and Easy Ryder were the openers for the day. The
destructions from Captain Dan were for a solid start and then
to accelerate after 10 overs….The first 2 overs the
pair played solid defensive shots and took the singles where
available. The in the 3rd Easy hit a beautiful cover drive
for 4 and Ed used his cheese slice for another. The acceleration
had begun. After 7 overs the score was on a very healthy 47-0,
with Easy hitting another cover drive, supported by Ed at
the other end and the running between the two was excellent.
In the 8th over however, the calling or should I say running
hit a hurdle. Easy played a square cut/drive…and called
the run and was off screaming “yeiissss” in his
now infamous way, Ed on the other hand either didn’t
recognise the “yeiissss” as meaning “yes”
or decided that he wasn’t going to go. Either way the
result was Easy being at the ‘wrong’ end with
Ed and the ball at the other – Easy run out for 14.
This brought Kim to the crease. Now Kim after his mature
knock the previous week had also been instructed to bat sensibly
and not to come back before he’d reached 50, at which
in true Kim fashion he declared in that case he was going
score a ton….At the end of the 8th over the score was
55-1.
The accelerator button was well and truly pushed during the
next over as Kim carted a 6 and 4, Ed added a 2 and there
were a few wides. 72 off 9. Unfortunately for the Consmen
the next 3 overs followed in the same fashion and suddenly
the score had raced to 115 for 1 off 12overs. The stream of
runs was halted by the number 5 bowler D Dean, who bowled
a very good line and length with a bit more pace which both
Cheese and Kim began to defend against. Therefore Kim decided
to take the runs against the other bowler and reached his
50 by scoring 2 huge 6’s in the 13over and Ed reaching
his half century in the next. By the end of the 15th over
the score had stopped rattling along at quite the same pace
but was a competitive 136-1. The 16th over saw another big
6 from Kim and lots of running, the next was the last over
from Dean which the pair took singles and 2s. 155-1 off 17.
And then all hell broke loose…..the last 3 overs the
acceleration pedal was floored. Kim decided to stop running
2s and went for boundaries instead. The last 3 deliveries
of the innings he clocked 2 6’s and a 4 to reach his
century and taking the Casuals total to a new record (and
top score of the season in any form of cricket) to 202-1.
Both Ed and Kim finishing an excellent innings with 67 and
103 not out respectively.
With a massive total to defend the pressure was off the bowlers.
BBN and Foxy opened. Nadeem started with a loosener wide,
followed by another and another….in fact the first over
was 12 balls in duration. However, his remaining 3 overs were
excellent and conceded only 9 more runs. Foxy varied his line
and length for the first 3 overs, restricting the batsmen
to singles and 2s and the occasional boundary, his last was
a bit more expensive not helped by some Casual fielding at
long on however, he did claim the 1st wicket caught by…..can
you guess?…..no one would have put money on it….but
with his 15th catch of his career Dave took a super running
catch at mid on!! 54-1 off 8. The Consmen actually had the
same score as the Cazh had at this point…
Goff who had been promoted in the batting line up after not
getting a bat at 5 the week before, and who failed to get
in batting at number 4 this week was given the next bowling
spell (next game he’s batting at 3!). His first over
was a bit loose and expensive, the Cazh guilty a little of
complacency in the field, however, newbee Gareth showed the
Cazh how to do it with a running dive, pick up and throw all
in one movement for an attempted run out – never before
seen (successfully) in a Casuals game…
Like Nadeem, Goff’s remaining 2overs were a massive
improvement as he found his line and length, restricting the
batsmen to singles. In form DT, with his first ball took the
wicket of the number 3, an absolutely shocker of a delivery
a leg side wide saying ‘hit me’, but the batsmen
only managed to top edge it straight into the hands of chirpy
Thrush behind the stumps. In Dave’s 3 over spell he
conceded only one boundary and took 2 more wickets in his
final over both bowled. 88-4 off 14overs.
Muff and Pablo bowled the next stint, Muff having (as he
claimed) a ‘certain’ lbw turned down, only to
take his wicket the next ball. Paul mixed his deliveries up
and wasn’t punished. Gareth was given the last but one
over and after a couple of looseners bowled 4 dot balls. The
game was concluded with the Consmen finishing on an admiral
126 for 5 (opener Skirrow unbeaten on 63) and on another day
would have been a competitive total.
Once again a tremendous effort with the bat and the bowling
and fielding has also improved. Well done all.
