Match report vs Glenwood
Church 21 August08@ Rumney RFC (Skipper Jam, report
Shakes)
The cazh turned up at this new venue, fully dapped, but more
than a little surprised that after the downpours of balmy
August we could get a game in - even on an artificial pitch.
Our trepidation increased when we discovered that the changing
rooms were only for the rugby boys and so we faced the long
yomp to the cricket pitch where most of us decided to change.
Luckily Dewbs, Muff and Goughy weren't available for this
game. I'm sure they would have drowned on the way to the wicket.
We waded for what seemed an eternity through standing water
to get to a patch of green between the rugby and football
pitches. The pitch was a bouncy carpet and the outfield was
littered with standing water but hey, this was the last midweek
game of the season and so we had to play.
Shakes and Ash opened the batting and got us off to an ok
start with 14 off the first 2 overs. Ash played across the
line once too often and was bowled but then Roachy joined
Shakes, looking to set a platform for our middle order. At
the end of the 10th over we had moved on to 45-3 with Shakes
gone for 19 and Roachy for 14. Batting wasn't entirely easy
on a pitch which offered some bounce and where the ball just
plugged in the outfield when you played a shot.
Porno batted circumspectly on his promotion to number 4 and
was eventually given out stumped for 6. It looked tight from
the boundary and there was some debate after the game. But
Ash raised his finger straight away and, with Kim departing
after two well struck 4's in his 11 and Stevo run out for
6, we needed a bit more impetus at the death to take us past
100.
Jam and Foxy plundered 42 from the last four overs with
two 6s and two 4s for the skip and a well paced 8 not out
from the Fox in a highly effective little knock where he successfully
gave the strike to the skip. Jam finished on 28* and the cazh
on 110-6 in a decent score.
Dan and Shandy opend up and bowled superbly to give Glenwood
some early problems. The initial problem for the bowlers was
to keep the ball on the pitch. The ball looked like a peanut
and swung like mad so we knew batting would be tricky (and
it suddenly became clearer why batting had become harder for
us). Glenwood did what they could but after 6 overs Dan had
2-5 and Shandy 0-4 (really unlucky) as they limped to 18 for
2.
After this the scorebook gets a little hazy as Glenwood
make steady progress towards the target although they always
seemed behind the rate. Doc went for 21 off his 3, Ash 16
off his 2 and Stevo for just 10 off his two although he did
get a wicket (played on) as Glenwood reached 53-4 off 12.
Then Roachy stepped up with two wickets in two balls, the
second an excellent diving catch from Shandy.
Some controlled hitting by the Glenwood opener Dobson kept
them in the game but it all went a bit Pete Tong when Shakey
picked up two wickets in the 16th over - the first another
excellent diving catch by Jam at deep mid-off, taking the
ball by his ankles as it travelled at pace. Needing 25 off
the last over was just too much for the oppo. Shakey picked
up the last wicket as Dobson carried his bat for 56.
An enjoyable game as it turned out and a good turnout in
the pub after. We discussed Ash's failed attempt at a diving
catch off his own bowling and the memorable fielding of porno
at long leg in the swamp that was the outfield. Tippy toeing
is certainly porno's forte - absolutely hilarious.
(Ed - The game was played in excellent spirit between the
two clubs, even Ash hitting their main batsman on the ear
with a throw in stopped the on field banter- an enjoyable
game all round)
