Match report vs. Tynewydd 19 June 2006, Wenvoe (skipper and report Goughy)

With the ‘most wins on the trot’ record safely recorded the previous day some felt this game was going to be a real tester with the oppo being Barry Strollers and some others, one of the others playing for Sully! Would there be too much of a hangover….would we show our mettle? No one really knew and when they turned up many a casual realised that we really did have a proper game on our hands.

The ‘new’ captain for the day was Goughy and with confidence seamlessly fell into the role by losing the toss. The casuals were sent in to the field. Not a bad toss to lose as Goughy was slightly unsure what to do anyhow. He did however negotiate the use of a white ball on a dark looking Wenvoe night.

In the absence of shagger, TH (Ed) opened from the pavilion end with late call up Andy Hood bowling up the slope. The oppo started slowly but very sure footedly and reached 13 off 3 and the first wicket fell when ‘Super’ Smitts swooped and ran out their opener. Great work from the student. 18-1 off 4. A good wicket but it hastened the arrival of D.Goodway sporting a Sully Centurians kit and a lean muscular look. This boy smelt of cricket and over the next 16 overs showed some class with shots that were all timing and great judgement. He ended on 51 not out which was effortless but did he need more?

The other opener was the next to fall with a chip shot to ‘Super’ Smitts who pounced and took a good catch (some good work by Matt D and Smitty to drop his position 10 yards for that shot) 20-2 off 5. The suicidal Tynewydd tried to up the rate but another run out by ‘Super’ Smitts had them at 24-4 off 7. Was this to be the game Smitty came of age and showed his worth - he was yet to bat………

Both openers bowled well and returned good figures, although Winky was wicket less this time. The next bowlers up were the swing and spin combo of Rob Sage and Doughboy Thomas. Dave fresh from turning up late and falling on his ass while trying to go for a catch. This move will forever be ‘The sugar plum fairy’ - balletic and engaging yet futile.

Down the hill Rob was getting the ball to talk and although he was wided acouple of times he produced two bits of magic. The first was trapping one of the oppo big hitters right in front which would have been given by a blind man. The second came after the Doughboy and Goughy partnership removed Edwards with a straight through the gate stumping and N.Mcinery came to the crease and his first ball was against Rob - who produced an absolute ‘jaffa’ which swung bounced and took the off bail only. NOT what you want first ball up really. The spin swing combo also returned good figures and at 85 -6 off 16 it was evenly poised.

The final pairing was Matt Davies and Scotty, who had been lost in thought on the boundary with only Billy to talk to (Scott at third man and Billy at wide third man) After commenting upon this to Scott Jonny F actually thought Billy was there as one raced past him at gully. Foolish. Billy was not where he was supposed to be and had made his way to play in the stream. Silly Billy.

Scotty kept up his ‘not being hit for a six’ record and went for 18 off his 2, while Matt bowled a good line and was unlucky to come back wicket less, but with some very iffy selfish running Tynewydd reached 115 for 7 off their 20.

Dain 4-1-13-1
Hood 4-0-19-0
Sage 4-0-25-2
Thomas 4-024-1
Davies 2-0-8-0
Fitz 2-0-18-0

With inspirational words ringing in their ears John and Smitty opened up and the ‘solid base’ was shattered on ball one as John got a leading edge and was caught well at short extra 0-1. This brought James to the wicket and although he tried to start the scoring off he failed to make it and was caught at slip for 0. 0-2 off 1. Deep shit. So with a mountain to climb the days skipper came in and was soon off the mark with a leg glanced 4. Smitty opened his account and the casuals started to build, lots of mid wicket conferences and advice and the casuals sauntered to 15 before Smitty played too straight with hard hands and was caught for 2. 15-3 off 4. Double deep shit.

In strode TH (the prof or doctor ed) and with 6.25 an over required it was still game on, although with only 7 wickets left. The Horse and Gough took up the challenge and decided to finally build that solid base and at 26-3 off 6 it was looking better. The aim was to see off good bowlers, play some safer shots and take singles, this happened and with majesty TH took it to the oppo and with wides helping our account it soon rushed to 64 off 10. The rate was down to 5.2 and the casuals were playing some shots hither to unheard of in such a game. In one tremendous over Goughy hit a straight 4 and promptly had a ‘twitch’, this was short lived as the Horse showed him how to really do it and creamed a masterful shot straight for 4. (I hope TH enjoyed it as much as I did)

The next 3 overs brought 10 an over and cool heads had brought the rate down to 3. The next 4.4 overs were a combination of straight batting and good running and after only 17.4 overs the casuals crossed the finishing line. With 1 needed from 2.3 overs a cry from the boundary of ‘you need 6 for your 50 Ed’. This would have destroyed most batmen but Ed serenely clipped the ball off his legs and only failed by 2 metres to get that 6. Ed finishing on 49 and slow’n’steady Gough finishing on 41. The stand was a new record for the 4th wicket 104 beating the 2 year old record set by Hood and Venkat….or should that read Venkat and Hood vs. the Cavaliers.

A good game in a good spirit and an unlikely victory as we looked out of it at 15-3. Apologies to Foxy who was not bowled so he could bat…..sorry old timer.
