Week 10 Report - DP

Post by Tesh »

The Willow League Cup took centre stage this past week. The dream tie pitted 2nd place South Glamorgan Education against 3rd place Cardiff Casuals. Batting first, Education were quickly in trouble as wickets began to tumble, the first batsman to reach double figures was number 8 Steve Parker as he top scored with 19, aided and abetted by number 9 Tim Wegener’s 13no. Dan Lewis led the charge for Casuals with 2-1, with Tesh Hirani also grabbing 2 wickets. Education were bundled out for just 72. The magnitude of that score, and perhaps the treacherous nature of the pitch, became evident as Casuals also struggled to make inroads on their target. Paul Stephens threatened briefly, with 17 from his openers position, but apart from extras this was to be Casuals only double digit score. Nick Alan grabbed 3-7, and Parker 2-4 as Casuals were shot out for just 53 to put Education through to the final.

In the second semi, 30th birthday boys Cardiff Cavaliers took on Rhiwbina on a slow, low pitch at Cathedral School. Invited to bat, Rhiwbina were spearheaded by Dominic Cain’s 23no, with Mike Street adding 20 Extras top scored with 25 to boost Rhiwbina to 113-6 at the close of their allotted overs. Mark Simpson (2-14) and Mark Twaits (1-9) were the pick of the Cavaliers attack. The Cavaliers reply matched the Rhiwbina innings for pace, with Andy Steadman contributing a vital 40 before mandatory retirement. Jimmy Marchant’s 22 kept the innings flowing, but work was still needed in the final over, 3 dot balls and a near miss run out sent Cavaliers into the final by a 6 wicket margin.

League play saw an intriguing match up as leaders Chartered Trust faced third place Cardiff Casuals. Craig Mohring’s 40 anchored a shaky Trust innings as they struggled to post a decent score in the face of some fine bowling from J Bannister (3-9), John Prior (2-16) and Dan Thomas (2-21). Trust closed on 112-9, with an unbeaten record very much in doubt. All doubt was rapidly removed as Craig Mohring (3-5) and Aqueel Iqbal (2-17) blasted the Casuals top order away. Andy Hood (21) and Paul Stephens (18) rallied the innings with a 6th wicket stand of 37, before Hood was run out trying to force the pace. Casuals required 25 from the final over to win, and to their credit battered 18, going down by a final margin of just 6 runs, eating into the bonus points for Trust, meaning the final round of matches still influences the destination of the title.

In the battle for a Shield place Eclipse Print took n Cardiff University Staff. Snehasis (36) started well for Staff but lacked support from the other end as the next best score was 12 from Khan. Fernando’s 3-3 ripped out the middle order to restrict Staff to 86-7. Alistair Collyer’s 47no dominated the Eclipse Print reply as Staff were unable to apply any brakes o the scoring rate, Print galloped to victory in just under 14 overs, with 6 wickets to spare.

Down in the cellar of the League, Cardiff Bay Barbarians blasted British Airways thanks in the main to a magnificent 76no from Sherrington in a total of 159-4. Rob Jones added 30. Richard Johnson (2-15) bowled well without any support for BA. The BA reply was spirited but ultimately in vain. Several batsmen made starts, led by Simon Morgan (26), Daviwa (16), Corood (16) and Johnson with 14, but no one could kick on to the big score required chasing such a daunting target. Mullins (2-14) started well at the top for the BaaBaas attack, and with Rob Jones claiming 2-9 in the tail BA closed well short on 96-6.
