Week 7 Match Report - Willow League 2009

Post by dan lewis »

Current League leaders South Glamorgan Education strengthened their grip at the top of the Willow League with a comfortable 36 run win over Cardiff Cavaliers. Batting first Education were given a great start by John Sparks (26) and P Richards (33), however once these two were parted wickets tumbled regularly, with Jimmy Marchant bagging 3 and Graham Chapman 2 to lead the way. If not for a profligate number of wides (23), Cavaliers target would have been more manageable than the 124-8 total posted. An early double strike by Wegener (2-23) left Smith (20) and Dave Parsons (21) to rebuild, but as with the Education innings, once a partnership was broken at the top of the innings, no others seemed to form, as wickets fell regularly, and the Cavaliers reply dwindled to 88 all out.

Cardiff Hockey and Eclipse Print are leading the chase behind South Glamorgan Education, with little to choose between the two, separated as they are by just 0.1 points. Hockey just stayed on track with a solid 9 wicket win over Cardiff University Staff. Batting first, Staff had a decent start from Simon Wallis (29) and Hughes (16). The introduction of Brookes (3-12) and Darwent (4-20) ripped the heart out of the innings which fell away to 102-9 at the close. Hockey made short work of the reply racing to 105-1; J Egan (42no) and M Gardiner (45no) put all the bowlers to the sword as victory was achieved in less than 14 overs.

Eclipse saw their lead cut by this result as they dropped a point in their victory over Rhiwbina. Eclipse were chasing just 68, the Rhiwbina total built around 27 from D Clayton, whilst Matt Williams (3-8) and Brian Condon (3-6) were all but unplayable as the cornerstone of the Eclipse attack. Alistair Collyer anchored the chase, but wickets from Thomson and Todd salvaged a point for Rhiwbina, but couldn’t stem Eclipse’s drive fro victory as the runs were duly knocked off in the 15th over.

Cardiff Casuals, usually challengers at the top, picked up their first win of the season, against Cardiff Bay Barbarians. The BaaBaa’s set a total of 98-7, with Rushby’s 28 the top score, Rhys Dart added a late flurry with 21no. Iain Warwick, with 2-10, made sure Casuals target stayed below three figures. John Furnham laid the foundation of the Casuals reply with 35, after Dart grabbed an early brace. An assured 29no from Jamie Pike saw Casuals to victory with 5 balls to spare by the margin of 6 wickets.

Bottom club GE Healthcare fared better in League competition than Cup against Chartered Trust, but not well enough to garner their first win of the year. Batting first GE put up their first three figure total of the season thanks largely to a 74 run partnership between Tom Gane (29) and Chris Norey (45), closing on 107-4. John Waters grabbed 2-5 to lead the Trust attack. Andy Smith (31no) and R Hobbs (38) put on 67 for the first wicket, before Adrian Sen (23no) joined Smith to see rust home by 9 wickets with 14 balls to spare. Jonathon Barlow (1-24) was the successful bowler
