Week 6 Match Report - Willow League 2009

Post by dan lewis »

It was a busy week in the Willow League with the Cup taking centre stage.

Current joint Cup-holders Cardiff Cavaliers booked a semi-final slot with a six wicket victory over Rhiwbina. Batting first Rhiwbina scored quickly early on, reaching 34 inside 5 overs. D Clayton retired on 26, and S Lewis on 25 but there were no other retirees as Cavaliers bowled well. Chris Evans and Jimmy Marchant both picked up 2 wickets as Rhiwbina were restricted to 129-8 in their 18 overs. In reply Cavaliers moved comfortably, despite a pair of wickets for Ted Pilling, with Marchant, Nigel Adams and Dave Parsons all reaching the retirement mark of 25. A couple of run-outs caused a wobble with overs running out, but a rapid 10no from Evans secured the victory.

Nowhere near the same drama as Chartered Trust faced GE Healthcare. Batting first Trust rattled up the runs at 10 and over, before Tom Gane and Dave Powell each took wickets, this only spurred the scoring as both Craig and Steve Mohring rattled past the retirement mark, Steve courtesy of a big six, and runs continued to flow as Trust closed on 196. The reply couldn’t have been more contrasting as runs were hard to come by, with Sandy Gupta snaring 3 wickets, and Obaid Saddique 2. Only Chris Norey (16) and Tom Gane (27no) made double figures as Trust ran away by the margin of 109 runs.

Consmen rounded out the action by defeating Cardiff Casuals. Batting first Consmen racked up 159-2, with Blandford, Jimmy Morgan, Darren Dean and John Corden all retiring Paul Stephens was the solitary wicket taker for Casuals. The chase was never quite on after Corden grabbed 3 wickets at first change. Kim Swain did hit 28ret, but Casuals closed on 130-6.

In the League there was a convincing win for South Glamorgan Education, by 9 wickets over GE Healthcare. Cardiff Bay Barbarians (Mogridge 71no) were convincing winners by 8 wickets against Chartered Trust. Eclipse Print kept their good start going with a nail biting 6 run win over British Airways, Dylan Powell the hero with 3-4 in just 5 balls to close the game. It was similarly close when Cardiff Hockey held on against Cardiff Cavaliers by the same margin. Cavaliers’ good start by Smith (39) and Thomas (26) was squandered as no other batsman reached double figures.
