The Willow League Cup got underway this past week, with holders South Glamorgan Education defending their crown against Chartered Trust. In a topsy-turvy Education lost an early wicket before John Sparks (24) and Nick Allen (20) consolidated. Runs and wickets then traded as Education moved to 99-9, only for last wicket pair Tomlinson (10no) and Wegener (8no) to push the final total to 120-9 at the close. Craig Mohring (2-9) was the pick of the Trust attack.

The defence of the title looked to be off to a flying start as wickets tumbled with Trust slumping to 39-7, enter Nabeel, who eventually flayed 43no, having gone through a mandatory retirement at 25 only to be back in almost immediately when another wicket fell, and Aqueel (19no). These two put the lower half of Education’s attack to the sword, including a final over which saw a dropped catch followed by a six hit to win the game with two balls to spare.

In their first full season of play, Cardiff Hockey chased down a competitive total of 118-9 hit by Eclipse Print, with a comfortable 39 balls to spare. Niluca (27no) top scored for Print, with G Coles adding 19 and Mike Williams 14. Jones, Brookes, Dennett and Cosins all picked up 2 wickets for Hockey. The Hockey reply was keyed by 28(retired no) from R Jones and 22 from G Egan, with the momentum sustained down the order, with 22no from S Francis hurling Hockey past the winning line.

In the final match Rhiwbina held off BA by totalling 131-4, with their top three (Clayton, Davies and Crowter) all retiring not out at the 25 mark. Only Simon Morgan (1-5) and R Humphries (2-5) were able to exert any control for BA. In reply R Johnson and Humphries both retired at 25 for BA, but with 6 of Rhiwbina’s bowlers going for less than 10 runs in their spell, the scoring rate was strangled, with BA closing well short on 89-5.
