The 2009 Willow League opened this past week with wins for Cardiff Bay Barbarians, Cardiff Hockey and Cavaliers. BA opened with a walkover and all the other matches fell victim to the weather.

The BaaBaa’s opened against Rhiwbina by rattling up 100-6. Darren Mogridge top scored with a well played 36no in poor conditions, Matt Clark chipped in with 25. Graham Sisk picked up 3 wickets and Dai James 2 for Rhiwbina. In reply the Rhiwbina innings got of to a slow start as Imran Ahmed grabbed 3 early wickets, and with Rob Jones, Mogridge and Clark difficult to get away there was never enough momentum in the chase as Rhiwbina closed well short on 64-9.

Casuals never got going against Cardiff Hockey with only Jamie Pike (15) and Mohamed (11no) reaching double figures. Wiggins grabbed 4-12 after Eskins (2-15), Brookes (1-8) and Hose (1-10) had dented the top order. Casuals closed on a disappointing 89-8, the total boosted by a mammoth 39 extras. Hockey were reeling after an opening burst of 3-6 from Dan Lewis, but were indebted to an unbeaten 30 from O’Deere, backed up by 17no from Eskins to reach the winning total with 5 wickets to spare.

In rather less bowler friendly conditions, Cardiff University Staff racked up 121-7 against Cardiff Cavaliers, Tripathy top scoring with an excellent 51, Davies and Fraser both bagged a pair of wickets apiece for Cavaliers. In reply, Andy Steadman continued with his run scoring from last season as he also scored 51, unbeaten this time, to anchor Cavaliers to a 3 wicket victory with just one ball to spare, this despite 2 wickets each for Morgan, Lord and Montgomery.
