Week 14 Report - DP

Post by dan lewis »

The only reported action this past week from the Willow League involved two sides already out of contention for the Plate.

Batting first GE Healthcare were made to struggle by some accurate bowling from Eclipse Print’s Dave Nash (1-9), Luke Bonnelle (1-4) and Lee Court (1-1) before a late rally from Robin Collier (10), Ian James (23no) and Simon Riddick (18no) boosted their tally to 73-6 at the close of their overs. Andy Court got the Print reply off to a flying start with a rapid 30, making light of the difficult pitch and weather conditions. With 40 runs raised from the first 5 overs, a Print win seemed a racing certainty. Some sharp work from Steve Hazell snare a run out, before Gordon Stephenson (2-13) struck twice in one over to produce a glimmer of hope, and with Court beaten neck and crop by Robin Collier (1-13) there was a wobble in the Print charge to victory. Simon Elliot’s steady 14no accompanied by Kevin Hull steadied the shop and pulled Print to a comfortable victory.

Cardiff Cavaliers celebrated 30 years as club and to help mark the occasion played a match against a Willow League XI. Batting first Cavaliers lost Warwick Armstrong early before Nigel Moore (30ret) and Joey Newbury (30ret) pushed the score along with some calculated hitting, all the more fitting as these were two of the original Cavaliers team. Paul Goring also added 22 before becoming the first of Dai James’ 2 victims (2-6). Cavaliers totalled 106 in their allotted overs.

The League XI’s reply was well paced with most batsmen getting a start before retiring at 15. Andy Powell, John Furnham, Sanjay Thupan and Andy Parry all reached this landmark and it was left to Dave Powell (10no) and Richard Holliday (12no) to ease the League team to victory in the penultimate over. Goring took a wicket to ad to his earlier runs, and he was joined by Glyn Poulsom as the only Cavaliers wicket takers.

All in all an enjoyable game and a fitting celebration of the spirit of cricket.
