Week 11 Report - DP

Post by dan lewis »

It was crunch time in the Willow League as Chartered Trust look to finish the season unbeaten and claim the league title ahead of South Glamorgan Education, whose game always looked in jeopardy from the weather. Standing between Trust and the title were Cardiff University Staff. Batting first on a damp wicket, Trust found the going tough, losing Craig Mohring for a duck in the first over. They bounced back to post 31 runs by the end of the 5th over, but at the cost of two further wickets. The lack of pace provided by Lawrence Badham (2-9) and Pete Brabham (0-15) further hamstrung the Trust innings and it was left to Steve Holton (29no) and Tristan Hancock (14) to push the Trust total to 101-8 at the close.

Still as Trust had found out batting was no easy matter on a slow Llanrumney wicket. The Staff batsmen toiled hard for runs against a nagging Trust attack. Hancock conceded just 5, and Craig Mohring 13 in their opening spells as Staff struggled to 26 of the first 10 overs. Simon Wallis took the bull by the horns as the asking rate soared, falling first for 33, and with the 50 mark not reached until the 14th over, the title looked safe. A combination of some fine hitting by Snehasis and some poor fielding by Trust gradually tilted the balance. Fifty-two from six overs became 20 from 2, then just 8 from the final over. Snehasis (49no) and Dave Goodman (9no) then grabbed the initiative with some well judged runs to see Staff to the winning post with one ball to spare, by the margin of 8 wickets. Netting just a single point, Trust saw the hand that had been on the title slip away, leaving South Glamorgan Education champions of the Willow League for 2008.

At the foot of the table, Rhiwbina condemned GE Healthcare to another wooden spoon as they handed out a 99 run drubbing. With Rhiwbina batting first, Allan Norman grabbed a wicket with the games very first delivery on his way to an excellent 3-19. With Jonathan Barlow also adding 3 wickets GE bowled a side out for the first time this season, but not before Mike Todd top scored with 30, B Evans adding 23, Phil Holt 20, John Davies 17 and Mike Street 15. Coupled with 32 extras Rhiwbina closed on 155. An eight man GE Healthcare batting line up was never quite able to make any headway. Norman top scored with 14 before being unfortunate enough to be run out backing up. Andy Gane added 13 as the Rhiwbina bowlers were made to toil for their wickets, but the final wicket pair held them at bay, closing on 56-6. Graham Sisk bagged 2 wickets with Dai James, Phil Holt and Kunalan one apiece.
