Week 9 Report - DP

Post by dan lewis »

Chartered Trust were looking to consolidate their position at the top of the Willow League against 30th birthday boys Cardiff Cavaliers. Batting first Trust were led off by a fine half century from Craig Mohring (54) and with able support from Mark Pickernell (22), John Cooper (22) and Steve Holton (21no), Chartered Trust posted a formidable 164-7. Matt Thomas grabbed two wickets for Cavaliers but only skipper Jimmy Marchant ws able to keep the scoring rate below 8 runs per over. In reply, Cavaliers got off to a flyer posting 47 runs in just the first 6 overs, mainly fro the flashing blade of Andy Steadman (42). Once he departed, the wheels fell off, with only Nigel Adams (17no) able to make it to double figures after that. A whopping 33 wide deliveries helped Cavaliers total look respectable, but they still finished a distant second on 122-9 to hand Chartered Trust a maximum points win, and probably place one hand on the League title.

The chasing duo of Cardiff Casuals and South Glamorgan Education were thus both in need of big wins to keep themselves in with a chance, should Chartered Trust slip up.

Education were indebted to a skipper’s knock of 79no from Jack Lansdown as they posted 155-5 against GE Healthcare. Steve Hazell snared 2 wickets for the visitors, with Dave Powell, Robin Collier and Elliot Keefe sharing the rest. The game was over as a contest by the end of the 6th over, which saw GE Healthcare five down with just 13 runs on the board. Andy Powell was virtually unplayable, returning 4-2. With Time Wegener adding 3 and Steve parker 2, maximum points were wrapped up inside 14 overs. Only Ian James, with 14, showed any resistance.

Meanwhile Cardiff Casuals did well to restrict Consmen to 124 all out. Consmen’s Skirrow added 42 from the opening slot, with A Bowen (16) and S Head (22) contributing well in the 2 and 3 positions. The innings fell away after the promising start With Nadeem Afzaal, Andy Hood and Manish Vyas all picking up a brace of wickets. M Perez gave Consmen early hope, sending both Casuals openers packing for a combined score of just 1 run before Vyas (74) steadied the ship in partnership with M Smith (37no). Casuals posted a 7 wicket victory with more than 2 overs to spare, but at the cost of valuable bonus points.

In the middle of the pack Rhiwbina plundered 183-2 against Cardiff Bay Barbarians, thanks in no small part to an unbeaten 73 from J Down. With Ashleigh Crowter adding 36no to go with 28 from D Clayton and 25 from M Sutton, the BaaBaas were run ragged in the field. Rob Jones’ (30) and Gwyn Walker’s (27), plus 20 from Nareen proved to be in vain as the BaaBaas were restricted to 131-5 in reply. D James grabbed 2 wickets for Rhiwbina, who ran out winners despite bowling an extra 4 overs in wides and no balls.
