With the rain finally abating, the Willow League Shield and Plate competitions finally managed to get in a full week’s play.

In the Shield League Champions Cardiff Casuals faced a short-handed Chartered Trust side. Batting first Trust rattled up 121-5, with a classy 62 from Steve Mohring forming the backbone of the innings, Richard Morris chipped in 25 as no other batsman managed double figures. M Brearley bagged two wickets in the final over of the innings to finish as the most successful bowler for Casuals. Despite the gaps in the field, the Trust team played out of their skins, keeping the flow of runs as low as possible, whilst still picking up wickets. S Karim (32no) and Mark Stephens (18 ) kept the total climbing after Craig Mohring (3-10) had destroyed the top order. With 20 required from the final two overs, and 13 from the last, it seemed 8-man Trust would pull off a miracle, but Karim and Matt Foote, somehow pulled the scores level to force a tie.

Elsewhere in the Shield Cardiff Cavaliers rattled up the runs against eight man Sevenoaks HiFi thanks in the main to a half century from Andy Steadman and 47 by Jimmy Marchant. Brian Condon (2-6) grabbed late wickets, as Cavaliers closed on 144-5. Replying Sevenoaks couldn’t take too many risks and yet still had to score at a healthy rate. Mike Williams hit a run a ball 25 but once he fell the scoring rate fell away as wickets tumbled. Marchant added 2-2 to his runs as Sevenoaks were all out for 70.

In the Plate both games saw runs at a premium, and close finishes. Consmen crawled to 56 all out against Cardiff Bay Barbarians with only A Crowe (16) reaching double figures, Andy Hagger grabbed 3-14, Malcolm Davies 2-4 and Matt Clark 2-5. The Barbarians reply was anchored by Darren Mogridge who hit an invaluable 27 as the BaaBaa’s also found batting difficult. The wickets were shared around equally, and good fielding forced 3 run outs, before the BaaBaa’s fell across the finish line with one wicket and two balls to spare.

GE Healthcare scored steadily, if slowly, against British Airways after losing a wicket first ball. Rupert Jones (17), Ian James (15) and Simon Riddick (13) held together the innings as GE Healthcare closed on 78-5. Simon Croll bagged 2-8 for BA. Robin Collier (3-8 ) and Dave Powell (2-8 ) shot out half the side in the opening six overs, but a captain’s innings on 57 from Chris Davies (no other batsman managed more than 4) held his team together. When he was run out on the first bal of the final over, 4 were needed, which mark Broughton duly delivered with just two balls left to play for a 1 wicket BA victory.
