Week 8 Report - by D Powell

Post by dan lewis »

The inclement weather all but wiped out yet another week’s play in the Willow League this past week. South Glamorgan Education’s annual battle against Cardiff Casuals had to be abandoned due to heavy rain with the game intriguingly balanced with Education at 47-3 from 11 overs. This a match up that always has an impact on the destination of the League title.

The only game that dodged the weather saw Sevenoaks HiFi take in Cardiff Cavaliers. Batting first, Sevenoaks were propelled to a massive total by an opening partnership that fell just shy of the club record as Alistair Collyer (59) and Simon Elliot (74) rattled up 144 for the 1st wicket. Powerful stroke play from the batsmen was aided and abetted by some poor work in the field from Cavaliers. The pair were out to Ross Bowen (1-10) and Jimmy Marchant (1-13) respectively, the only bowlers able to show any form as Sevenoaks closed on a mammoth 158-2.

The Cavaliers reply was blown out of the water by a stunning spell of 4-9 by Mike Williams, and with able support from Rob Dayton-Jones (1-8 ). A spell of 3-4 from Luke Bonnell was instrumental in ending Cavaliers misery as they were bundled out for 82. Graham Newbury (20no) just surpassed extras (19) to claim the top scoring spot.

All this left the top two in the League unchanged, with South Glamorgan Education in top spot, followed by Cardiff Casuals and Sevenoaks HiFi.
