Match Report vs Malayalee
04 May 2023 @ Wenvoe (Skipper Jim, report Rob)
After one rained off match, the Cazh finally got their season
off to a start at Wenvoe against a brand new team –
Malayalee, who looked super keen, especially as they had 13
players and a manager.
The Casual Schafernakers has been posting the usual forecasts
and live weather data from South Wales most desirable postcodes:
Birchgrove, Canton, Cowbridge, Heath, and Penylan. Every weather
app available was attempted, searching for that ray of hope...
Some renegotiating got the game reduced to 16 overs as it
was already pretty dark / raining, and the various forecasts
all looked ominous. Super Vice Skipper Hands started on a
high, losing the toss – the Cazh are bowling in the
rain, with Dan and Goffy opening. Shakes had to leave, so
the Cazh were fielding with 10.
The openers batted like they’d never seen Wenvoe before.
First ball, the batsman saw it pitch halfway down, and made
the sound choice to step back and prepare to hoik it over
mid-wicket. Instead it hit him on the ankle, bang in front.
The umpire didn’t give it, presumably as he wasn’t
watching. Neither batter learned from that, but why worry
if LBW isn’t in play? Every shot was a backfoot swipe
over mid-wicket or over the covers. Both scoring well with
a few 6s off Goffy.
They raced along to 56 off 6 overs, before Tim and Maxy got
a go. The rain was really coming down now, Tim was throwing
up some moonballs, and the batsmen had no idea what was going
on. A few giant swipes, sometimes at the same delivery, but
not much contact. One chipped up, but Jim couldn't get to
silly mid off to make the catch, but Tim was luckier with
the next ball which was caught well by Alex at mid-wicket
(Sigo - 45 off 23 balls). SteveO could have topped up his
catch haul, but was unlucky to shell a tricky catch at long
on. Choose you SteveO expletives of choice here - he tried
a few out.
Maxy slipped in his bowling stride first ball, and the ball
was slipping out of his hand. Two balls landed at Alex’s
feet, running in from mid-wicket – both tough chances
in the conditions. At the end of the over, it was agreed to
go off as the rain was well set, and there was a puddle forming
just off the strip.
Mayayalee - 93-1 (8 overs). Match abandoned.
It was nice to see both sides at The Wenvoe Arms to formally
open the season, accompanied by crips and fresh (ish) pork
scratchings. Sadly, three sandwiches (donated by Rhys) were
binned. Discraceful.
